3 3 Introduction Following the 60 th Meeting of the Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives (CRP) of the International Centre for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) Member States South Africa and ICSTI agreed to organize the ICSTI-South Africa Workshop on Nanomaterials Where: South Africa When: February 2011

5 5 The objectives of the workshop To complement existing science and technology bilateral cooperation between South Africa and individual ICSTI Member States To promote research cooperation in the field of nanomaterials between South Africa and ICSTI Member States To promote the development and application of nanostructured materials, jointly with ICSTI Member States, in support of the following industries: health, water, energy, space, mining and minerals, and bio and chemical processing

6 6 The expected outcomes of the workshop Identify and scope modalities for cooperation (infrastructure, exchange visits, funding etc) in the area of nanostructured materials between South Africa and ICSTI Member States Develop an outline of research and development cooperation in the production of new and novel nanomaterials for industrial application in South Africa and ICSTI Member States

10 10 South Africa-India cooperation on nanomaterials DST/CSIR Nanotechnology Innovation Centre, is working with: Purdue University in the area of Advanced in-situ laser-plasma diagnostics the Indian Institute of Technology in the area of Polymer based nano- structured materials Banaras Hindu University on Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology Indra Gandhi Institute of Atomic Research on Thin Films and Sensors Nanotechnology Innovation Centre, Mintek is working with: Indian Institute of Technology on R&D - Sensors Burdwan University in the area Analysis of nanomaterials and student supervision

11 11 South Africa-Russia cooperation on nanomaterials DST/CSIR Nanotechnology Innovation Centre, is working with: Moscow State University on R&D – Sensors Nanotechnology Innovation Centre, Mintek is working with: Moscow State University on R&D – Sensors A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was concluded : between the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Federal Agency for Science and Innovation (FASI) to establish cooperation in nanotechnology
