2. Vocabulary Definitions Angle - The amount of turn between two straight lines that have a common end point (the vertex). Line segment- The part of a line that connects two points and has definite end points. Line- In geometry a line: is straight (no curves), has no thickness, and extends in both directions without end (infinitely). Point- A point is an exact location. It has no size, only position. Ray- A line with a start point but no end point (it goes to infinity) Side- One of the lines that make a flat (2-dimensional) shape. 3. Instructions/Tips When naming lines, line segments, rays, triangles, or angles you should include the proper symbol before the letters. If you are naming a different shape you should include all of the sides. i.e. Rectangle ABCD or Kite PRSQ When naming something in geometry you must use capital letters (Triangle) (Angle) (Ray) (Line) (Line Segment) Naming a shape, line, line segment, ray, or angle is not a random process. You must follow an order when recording a name. For an angle you must first start at one point and then either list the rest of the points clockwise or counterclockwise and they can’t be listed in a mixed up order. For a line you must include any two points. For a line segment you must include the two endpoints. And for a ray you include the one endpoint and one other point on the ray. If you name a ray, line, or line segment follow the three examples above. To name each one you choose two points on the “line” and draw a symbol of what it is, (Ex: If it is a line you could write its name like shown to the right)
