minerva-victoria The Porta Romana or Roman Gate belongs to the city walls of the first century BC. - A statue of the winged Minerva-Victoria, found on the nearby Piazzale della Vittoria, formed part of the decoration of the upper part. Minerva was the favorite goddess of Domitian. (last emperor of the Flavian dynasty -Roman Emperor )

A Nereid and the dog Monnus
A Nereid and the dog Monnus. The House of the Dog Monnus (to the north-west of the Porta Romana) was originally a republican building. Below the Nereid is a dog wagging its tail. An inscription in the mosaic gives us the name of the dog: Monnus ("Darling"?). The mosaic has been dated to the early third century.

Slide 5 - Ostia's best preserved compitum (a shrine at crossroads) is on Piazza dei Lari, a small square to the south of the House of Diana (I,III,3-4). The oldest evidence on this small square is a late-Augustan or Claudian marble altar with a relief and an inscription.

- In frigidarium C is the mosaic that gave the building its name
- In frigidarium C is the mosaic that gave the building its name. The border consists of a city wall (referring to Rome?). In the centre is a further city wall, with gates and towers (referring to Ostia?). Towers at the four angles are supported by telamones (figures of Atlas, “male caryatids”). Around this wall are small, two-wheeled wagons or carriages, called in Latin cisia, driven by coachmen (cisiarii). They were drawn by mules, and the names of some of these are inscribed: Pudes (“Modest”), Podagrosus (“Gouty”), Potiscus (?), Barosus (“Silly”). Around the wagons are some marine figures.

In the centre are four dolphins, referring to the sea
In the centre are four dolphins, referring to the sea. To the right of the dolphins are two male, winged heads, one bearded and one unbearded. These represent winds. Two other heads represent provinces. A female head with a wreath of olive is the personification of Spain. The triskeles (three legs) is the symbol of Sicily. To the left of the dolphins are two more winds, and two more provinces. A female head with a crocodile-head is the personification of Egypt. A female head with an elephant’s head and tusks refers to Africa. Shields and spears refer to the conquering of the provinces. The mosaic is most likely related to the building of the harbour of Claudius at Portus: the city of Rome relied on Sicily, Egypt and Africa for most of its grain; Spain was a major oil-exporting province. Detail of a mosaic dating to the Claudius period and known as the "mosaic of the four winds and the four provinces." It can be found in one of the thermal baths in Ostia Antica
