5 Colonial Life Most colonists lived on farms Families divided up the work between different family members – Some members would farm, plant, raise animals, repair the farm, take care of the home, etc. Farmhouses were not comfortable. Colonists slept on wooden planks, huddled around fires when cold and had few utensils

6 Family Roles The following roles were in the gentry (upper class) and middle class Men – – Controlled the family’s income and property – Worked the land if in the frontier – Represented their families for voting Women – – Arranged marriages – Had many children with her husband – When married, everything she owned became her husband’s – Could not vote or own property Young People – IF they survived infancy, they were forced to work by 7 – Boys would work and learn with their father, and the girls would learn from their mother

7 Middle Passage The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade was the transport of slaves between West Africa and the Americas The Atlantic Slave Trade was a 3-way trade between the colonies, the Caribbean and Africa.

8 Life of a Slave Slavery has existed for thousands of years, but it did not always last for life At the beginning, slavery was not for life in the colonies, and the slaves were treated well – In 1639, Maryland passed a law stating that baptism did not lead to liberty, thus making slavery for life. In 1663, Virginia said that children born of slaves were born slaves Some states resisted slavery, but the temptation of making more money was more appealing. Slavery led to racism. Fear of slave revolts led to slave codes (laws removing rights from slaves)

9 African Cultural Influences Spread their language African styles were used in quilts, furniture, walking sticks, and other objects Dances and the rhythm of drums and the banjo Some African folk tales became a part of American culture
