18 Learning Math “Research has solidly established the importance of conceptual understanding in becoming proficient in a subject. When students understand mathematics, they are able to use their knowledge flexibly. They combine factual knowledge, procedural facility, and conceptual understanding in powerful ways. ” National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). (2000c). Principles and standards for school mathematics. Retrieved September 14, 2005, from http://www..nctm.org/standards/overview.htm http://www..nctm.org/standards/overview.htm

19 Learning Math through Problem Solving Schoenfeld calls problems “starting points for serious explorations, rather than tasks to be completed”  The answer is not the only important goal.  Understanding is developed, not delivered.  Students need to explore, struggle, develop, extend, wonder, and be confused. Schoenfeld, A.H. "Learning to think mathematically: Problem solving, metacognition, and sense making in mathematics." Handbook of research on mathematics teaching and learning: A project of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Ed. D.A. Grouws. New York, NY: Macmillan, 1992. 334–370.

20 How to Approach Problem Solving  The goal is not to be over and done.  The goal is to think and express.
