2
Group 17: Halogens Group 17 consists of 5 elements: Fluorine (F)
Chloride (Cl) Bromine (Br) Iodine (I) Astatine (At)
3
Type of elements These elements are Non-Metals.
4
Group Configuration
5
Valence electrons Group 17 has 7 valence electrons, and an oxidation number of -1.
6
State of matter at room temperature
Fluorine- Gas Chloride- Gas Bromine- Liquid Iodine- Solid Astatine- Solid
7
Practical uses for group 17 elements
Fluorine- Used as fluoride in toothpaste to prevent tooth decay and cavities. Liquid fluorine is also used as a component in rocket fuel. It can also be used to make Teflon- a nonstick coating in cookware. Chlorine- Most commonly used in bleaching our paper products. Chlorine also is used to purify drinking water and swimming pool water. Chlorine is also used as a disinfectant.

Practical uses for group 17 elements (continued)
Bromine- Used to disinfect water, and is present in flame proof agents. It is also used in coal power plants to reduce mercury levels. Iodine- Used to purify water and as a sterilizing agent. The deficiency of iodine in the human body can affect the thyroid. Astatine – Astatine 211 is a radioactive tracer and is used in treatment for cancer.
9
Physical properties of the Halogens
Highly reactive with alkali metals Seven valence electrons High electro-negativities
10
Chemical reactivity Chlorine reacts with Sodium to form Sodium Chloride (Table Salt) Iodine reacts with Bromine to form Bromide Chlorine reacts with water to form hypochlorite.
