Bellwork for March 11, 2014 Take handouts from the back counter. Write in your agenda. I can identify the correct use of comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs within context. I can identify the main idea of a text. I can organize ideas into a paragraph with an introduction, developing sentences, conclusion, and appropriate transitions. Begin Caught’ya! Day 38.

Vocabulary for Week 13 reiterated- (verb) say something again or a number of times, typically for emphasis or clarity.

Vocabulary for Week 13 Vernacular- (noun) the language or dialect spoken by the ordinary people in a particular country or region. Concurred- (verb) be of the same opinion; agree. Slang- (noun) a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal and are more common in speech than writing Jocose- (adjective) playful or humorous.

Main Idea *Remember! When finding the main idea you need to know the topic and the controlling idea of a paragraph. To find the controlling idea ask the question, “Why?” and “In what way?”

Important Vocabulary With your shoulder partner, discuss the definition of the following words. Write your definition on the inside flap of your foldable. Be ready to share your answers. Topic Controlling Idea Topic Sentences Supporting Details Main Idea

Directions As I read the article, you should start to think about the topic. What is the topic? Find the topic and circle it as many times as you see it. Next, find the topic sentence. Circle it in green. If you have found the topic and topic sentence, you should be able to find the controlling idea. Find it and circle it yellow. Find and underline all details that support your topic sentence in red. Find any transitional words and underline them in purple. At the top of the article, write an original title. On the back of your foldable, write a main idea statement. Make sure it is one sentence that clearly states the topic and controlling idea.
