Puritans were a group of Protestants in England during the 1500s and 1600s. They wanted to “purify” the Church of England

The Separatists were part of the Puritan movement, and wanted to withdraw from the established church. Separatist actions were deemed illegal, and members faced arrest

One congregation of the Separatists, known today as the Pilgrims, fled England and eventually ended up in America. September 1620 – they set sail across the Atlantic Reached Cape Cod in September 1620

Half of the colonists died during the first winter. Without the help of the Wampanoag and other Native American groups, the entire colony might have died
