John and Sonya Stanchfield….

As the District’s 2015 Conservationists of the Year

John & Sonya started “Precious Farms Garden” to sell produce at the local Farmers Markets. They began growing produce on the ground.

They realized that raised beds would yield more produce. They constructed 12 rows of beds 4 feet wide by 36 feet long

They planted beans, carrots, beets……….

Corn and Pumpkins……….

Onions, Radishes, Herbs……….

Pole beans, Peas……….

Potatoes and Squash

In 2013, the Stanchfield’s proposed putting up 4 high tunnel structures

They wanted to grow organic, heirloom tomatoes at 7,400’ elevation in Colorado

100 tomato plants were planted in each building

Each high tunnel was 20’ by 32’ totaling 2,560 sq. ft. of space

Cucumbers and Peppers were grown on the outside edges where tomatoes were too tall

More than 1,500 lbs. of tomatoes, cucumbers and Peppers were sold at the Farmers Markets

They were the only local, all organic vegetables available at their markets..

And they sold fresh farm eggs and grass-fed lamb for 3 years increasing production every year

In recognition of their outstanding land stewardship of the natural resources………

We award John and Sonya Stanchfield as the District’s 2015 Conservationists of the year
