Unit 1 Overview 09/29/08 9R Unit 1 Overview 09/29/08 9L

Comparing and Ordering Decimals Lesson 1.2 Page 6-7

Lesson 1.2: Comparing & Ordering Decimals (pg. 6-7) 09/29/08 10R Lesson 1.2: pg. 7, # 5-16 09/29/08 10L Standards:

CA Content Standards Number Sense 1.1: We compare and order decimals. Mathematical Reasoning 1.0: We make decisions about how to approach problems.

Lesson 1.2: Comparing & Ordering Decimals (pg. 6-7) 09/29/08 10R Lesson 1.2: pg. 7, # 5-16 09/29/08 10L Standards: Vocabulary:

Review Vocabulary: WHOLE NUMBER AKA: a counting number. One of the complete numbers (1, 2, 3, …) or zero.

Review Vocabulary: DECIMAL A symbol (.) used to demonstrate that a number is a fraction or not complete. The opposite of a whole number. For example: 1.5, 8.77, 9.201

Lesson 1.2: Comparing & Ordering Decimals (pg. 6-7) 09/29/08 10R Lesson 1.2: pg. 7, # 5-16 09/29/08 10L Standards: Vocabulary: Objective:

Compare and order decimals. Math Link: You have learned how to compare and order whole numbers. Now you will learn how to compare and order decimals.

Lesson 1.2: Comparing & Ordering Decimals (pg. 6-7) 09/29/08 10R Lesson 1.2: pg. 7, # 5-16 09/29/08 10L Standards: Vocabulary: Objective: Notes/ Examples:

Which number is greater: 0.357 or 0.359? Step 1: To compare decimals, start at the left and compare digits in the same place. Step 2: If corresponding digits are the same, move on to the right. 0.357 0.359 Step 3: Once you find two corresponding digits that are different, the larger one belongs to the greater number. Therefore, 0.357<0.359.

Which decimal is the greatest: 2.53 or 2.49? Step 1: To compare decimals, start at the left and compare digits in the same place. Step 2: If corresponding digits are the same, move on to the right. 2.53 2.49 Step 3: Once you find two corresponding digits that are different, the larger one belongs to the greater number. 2.53 > 2.49 Example 1.

Which decimal is the greatest: 0.347, 0.349, or 0.336? Step 1: To compare decimals, start at the left and compare digits in the same place. If corresponding digits are the same, move on to the right. 0.347 0.349 0.336 Step 2: Once you find two corresponding digits that are different, the larger one belongs to the greater number. 0.336 < 0.347 < 0.349 Example 2.

Which decimal is the greatest: 1.4357, 1.3475, or 1.4375? Step 1: To compare decimals, start at the left and compare digits in the same place. If corresponding digits are the same, move on to the right. 1.4357 1.3475 1.4375 Step 2: Once you find two corresponding digits that are different, the larger one belongs to the greater number. 1.3475 < 1.4357 < 1.4375 Example 3.

Which decimal is the greatest: 2.71, 2.6, or 2.65? Step 1: If decimals have different numbers of places, use equivalent decimals in the comparison. 2.71 = 3 places2.6 = 2 places2.65 = 3 places 2.6  2.60 (3 places) Step 2: To compare decimals, start at the left and compare digits in the same place. If corresponding digits are the same, move on to the right. 2.71 2.60 2.65 Step 3: Once you find two corresponding digits that are different, the larger one belongs to the greater number. 2.60 < 2.65 < 2.71 Example 4.

Lesson 1.2: Comparing & Ordering Decimals (pg. 6-7) 09/29/08 10R Lesson 1.2: pg. 7, # 5-16 09/29/08 10L Standards: Vocabulary: Objective: Notes/ Examples: Moral of the Story:

The Moral of the Story Comparing decimals is similar to comparing whole numbers. Compare each place of each number digit-by-digit.
