Interview styles

Questioning Types When it comes to interviews there are two questioning types, open, and closed. Open: These types of questions include things such “who?” “why?” “where?” These give the interviewee a chance to expand on their questions and explain their answers. You can use multiple of them together to get a more lengthy, and detailed answer from their interviewee. Closed: These types of questions tend to have a “yes or no” or a number response to them, they’re questions like “did you have a nice day?” or “how many cakes did you eat”

Print Interviews KERRANG Magazine Casual banter between friends Crude jokes made through out Casual language used Tries to put a comedic twist into the article with the intro Swearing used without being stared out Interview is more of a conversations, making it seem like a radio or TV interview from lack of author description All questions used are open ended Intended for entertainment purposes Non promotional Used to sort of expose both bands members, in a fun, quirky way

Print interviews Independent Newspaper More formal language used More writing by the author than response from the interviewee Swear words have been replaced by ‘*’ on some of the letters. Intended for entertainment purposes The questions asked are not stated within the article Non promotional

Comparison KERRANG magazine tends to be more of a laid back magazine, with writing that’s used for entertainment purposes mostly, within each magazine there are more informative pieces, such as concert reviews, and the serious interview they sometimes have with band members. This is probably due to the magazines audience which is for teenagers from the ages of about 14-19, where as the independent, has more of an older, mature audience, so the interviews include a lot more writing and more formal language is used by the writers. The independent example I got did not include any of the questions that were actually asked to the interviewee, where as in the KERRANG magazine example I got, it included all the questions in bold red writing. This usually isn’t the case, but for the specific interview I chose it was.

TV Interviews This Morning interview with Katie Hopkins and Katie Waissel: There’s an introduction to the interview from the presenters All the language used is formal No swear words are used due to it being on day time TV Both open and closed questioned are used One basic question is asked at the start, other are improvised as the interview goes on Interview is more like a discussion than an interview due to a lot of opinions being shared throughout For entertainment purposes and not informative https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK87lKJq6lI

TV Interviews Rock Sound interview with All Time Low No introduction to the interview All questions are showed on the screen All questions used are closed questions Each interviewee has a separate chance to speak due to all being interviewed individually For entertainment purposes, for fans of the bands to learn more about them Swear words are used and not bleeped out The language isn’t formal and the interview technique is very casual Jokes are made throughout, keeps up the casual, friendly vibe
