Goals Content Goal: Students will begin to develop their ideas and thesis statements for their grant writing individual research papers and will gain insight into expectations through the examples. Language Goal: Students will further develop their understanding of the separate sections of the paper as well as the parts of the paragraphs. Social Goal: Students will transition well between different activities and will work well individually.

Each Group’s Focus/Problem

Building our Counter Argument Paragraphs What other organizations exist that are already working towards solving this problem? What are alternative options/programs/organizations that can offer different solutions to your group’s problem? Turn back that refutes that alternative options and states why your option will best serve the community Research that supports (or draws negative attention to in your turn back) the other side of the argument/the alternative options

Topic sentence While The Tiny House Project provides individuals struggling with homelessness shelter and job opportunities in a unique and personalized way, there are alternative options in the Champaign-Urbana community that offer similar accommodations and assistance. While (write here what you organization provides as well as the unique aspects of your organization), there are (list out some of the alternative options in Champaign-Urbana that already exist).

Overview of other organizations/programs The Times Center and Restoration Urban Ministries both have specific programs currently in place that look to help the homeless in Champaign County. The Times Center, as stated on the shelterlistings.org website, provides transitional housing for up to seventy men at any said time, as well as three meals a day, seven days a week. Restoration Urban Ministries even have a mini house project themselves, offering affordable housing to any individual that is interested. Go over some specifics of the programs/organizations that already exist in our community and the type of supports that they offer.

Turn Back These alternative options do a tremendous job in helping the homeless population on a daily basis, but there are some downfalls and gaps to their programs overall. While The Times Center can hold a significant amount of individuals, only men are allowed access to these supports, meaning that women, children, and families are unable to benefit from this organization. In addition, the Restoration Urban Ministries mini houses cost $27,000 overall, at $350-400 a month, impeding those without a startup budget or a job from participating in the program (Restoration Urban Ministries). Refute the alternative options and find gaps in their current plans.

Concluding Sentence/Wrap Up The Tiny House Project offers help to all genders, ages, and families, and does not require any regular payments for accommodations, allowing its residents to focus solely on finding employment and getting back on their feet financially. Wrap up the paragraph by offering up a response to the information in the turn back and an overall connection back to your program’s goals.

Figuring out our budget Take out a sheet of paper, and make two columns Label the one on the left “The Tiny House Project” and the one on the right with the name of your project On the left I want you to help me out by suggesting all of the things that I am going to need to spend money on to get this project started On the right I want you to think of all of the things that YOU will need to spend money on to get your project started
