It was built from on orders from the tsar Ivan the Terrible by Russian architects Barma and Postnik to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan.

The cathedral is an ensemble of eight churches of different shapes topped with onion domes that are traditional for the Russian architecture. Each church is named in honor of the saint in whose memorable day there was an important event during the campaigns of the tsar Ivan the Terrible to Kazan. The central church is dedicated to the Eastern Orthodox feast of the Protection of the Theotokos.

The lower Church was attached to the Cathedral in 1588 over theburial place of St. Basil's Cathedral. Stylized inscription on the wall tells the story about the construction of this Church canonized a Saint by order of Tsar Feodor Ioannovich.

The Church of St. Basil the blessed was closed in 1929, Only in the end of XX century it was restored to its decoration. August 15, 1997, the feast day of St. Basil's Cathedral, the Church resumed Sunday and holiday services.
