1 05.22.15 (A) 05.26.15 (B) Students will read to determine the meanings and pronunciations of unfamiliar words and phrases. Students will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts.

2 Warm-Up: 5 minutes Complete the corrections to each example in your writer’s notebooks. Directions: Rewrite these sentences correctly making corrections to any spelling, and citation errors. 1.The author norton juster says “There wance was a boy named milo who didnt now what to do with himself—not just sometimes, but always.” (pg. 9). 2.In the book milo says “isnt it beautiful” (pg 102).? 3.In the book milo always is bored. (10).

8 Picture Books What do pictures do for books? What would a picture book with no pictures be like? Challenge: I will read you a great book (written by B.J. Novak). I want you to imagine what pictures would look like IF you could put pictures in this book. Record how the author “illustrates” without using pictures.

9 The Crossover Take a look at the visuals Kwame Alexander uses to “illustrate” like B.J. Novak did. What do you notice? What helps to read the poem?

10 Your Turn Create your own poem that describes you now. How have you changed since your first year at JML? What makes you, YOU? How are you now prepared to be an “eighth grader”? Experiment with the way the text is written or delivered to the reader.

I know you can write more than 4-5. 4-5 is just the minimum. You are more than the minimum. (WAY more.)
