S ENTENCE STRUCTURE ! Charlotte krupa

S IMPLE SENTENCES Simple sentences only contain one independent clause. An independent clause is a group of words that complete a thought. Examples of simple sentences: I enjoy family time on the weekends. My friend is coming over tomorrow. I like to laugh with my friends.

C OMPOUND SENTENCES A compound sentence contains at least two independent clauses that are combined using a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon. Examples of compound sentences: The girl cooked and the boy cleaned. I like to eat apples and I love to swing on the swings at the park. The horse ran away; the pig ran after the horse.

C OMPLEX SENTENCES A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one dependent clause. A dependent clause is a group of words that do not express a complete thought. Examples of complex sentences: The fence was built by the hard working boy, but not the girl. I helped my mom make dinner, after I finished my homework.

C OMPOUND - COMPLEX SENTENCES Compound-complex sentences are sentences that contain at least two independent clauses and one dependent clause. Examples of compound-complex sentences: I like to read my book, but not at night, because reading at night makes me very tired. My dog is so lucky, all she does is sleep all day, and she’s yelled at for that!

P RACTICE SENTENCES 1) My favorite subject is math, but language arts is more fun this year. 2) I ran out of conditioner last night. 3) When I go jogging, I always run into my best friend and we end up walking back and talking together. 4) I like dogs, and cats too. 5) My favorite pizza is from Suwanee pizza tavern, because it’s so good. 6) I have really fun classes this year, except I’m not a fan of all the work I have to do at home. 7) I always get the Leaping Lizard at Planet Smoothie, because it’s so good, and I have an obsession with smoothies. 8) Rolling chairs are fun to sit in at the computer lab. 9) My dog is really weird, because she is scared of storms, and my dog will not eat certain foods that we feed her. 10) Ansley can wiggle her pinky toe.
