Where did Project CHARACTER* come from? Project CHARACTER* was established as a result of a grant that was awarded by the U. S. Department of Education’s Character Education Program on October 1, 2002 to the former Community School District 3 of New York City. It was developed by James J. Carroll, Ph.D. and is directed by Howard Krieger. One of the consultants who works closely with Jim and Howard is Joseph Montecalvo, director of Project LEGAL. U. S. CITIZENSHIP The Character Education Public Policy Analyst (CEPPA): Define (1) schoolwide, (2) classroom & (3) curriculum social problems & develop new public policy solutions

The CEPPA addresses these school social problems… (a) discipline problems (b) students’ grades (c) participation in extracurricular activities (d) parental and community involvement (e) faculty and administration involvement (f) student and staff morale

The Six Steps of the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) Define the Problem Gather the Evidence Identify the Causes Evaluate an existing policy Develop Solutions Select the best solution (Feasibility & Effectiveness)

What is The Social Problem? Social problems exist in any community (your school, your classroom, your state). Social problems are situations that some people dislike (crime, smoking, garbage). Social problems hurt the community and have bad consequences (health problems, dropouts, poverty). Example: The increase number of students who arrive late to school

If we all work together as a team… then CHARACTER will achieve its goals and objectives at KING SCHOOL.
