WHAT IS A POLITICAL CARTOON? Aka: Editorial cartoons A drawing representing current public figures or issues symbolically and often satirically: a political cartoon. What does “satirically” mean? Satire = the use of irony, sarcasm, or ridicule to expose a folly (foolish action)

ASK YOURSELF 1. What do figures/objects in the cartoon represent? 2. Is anything exaggerated in the cartoon? 3. Are there any words or statements in the cartoon? 4. Can you explain the cartoon’s point of view?

EXAMINE THE CARTOON Look at everything the cartoonist has drawn! Double-check the little details Identify any written words
