 What does an typical ICT lesson look like in your school?

 “limited use of ICT to enhance the development of conceptual understanding and pupils’ enjoyment of learning.”  Ofsted Mathematics: Made to Measure 2012  “The most prevalent weaknesses were the absence of any systematic monitoring or assessment of the progress of students in ICT together with the lack of any evaluation of the contribution of ICT to improving outcomes.”  Ofsted ICT in schools 2008 - 11

Why change? CBI: SET for Growth August 2010

Why change?  ICT will no longer be in the National Curriculum from September 2012  What will pupils be taught?  Why is ICT important in mathematics?

An Opportunity  “At over £2 billion in global sales, the UK’s video games sector is bigger than either its film or music industries, and visual effects, the fastest growing component of the UK’s film industry, grew at an explosive 16.8 per cent between 2006 and 2008.”  Next Gen Report

 We have surveyed parents, young people and teachers........and....have found a worrying lack of understanding of the importance of maths, physics and art.  And we have undertaken in-depth interviews with....the UK’s video games and video effects employers, who reveal a real dissatisfaction with the talent pool available in the UK, which means that many have to recruit overseas instead.  Next Gen Report

ICT and Mathematics  The industries suffer from an education system that doesn’t understand their needs. This is reinforced by a school curriculum that focuses in ICT on office skills rather than the more rigorous computer science and programming skills

What Ofsted say is good practice?  “The schemes of work provide a clear guide to staff and the department is well organised for teaching resources, including use of ICT. “  “Good teachers made discriminating and well- planned use of ICT to support directly the aims and objectives of the lesson. “  “central to improving student success in all subjects.......ICT was embedded in all schemes of work and was seen as part of the everyday classroom”
