Graphing A Function Rule
Lesson 4-4
2
To graph a function rule:
Choose 3-5 numbers for x (unless the domain is given to you.) Complete a function table to find values for y. Graph the resulting ordered pairs.
3
A y = 2x + 4 x 2x + 4 y -2 2(-2) + 4 -1 2 2(-1) + 4 2(0) + 4 4 1 2(1) + 4 6 Complete the function table with points chosen for “x” Plot the points Connect with a line
4
B. x 2x + 4 y -2 3 -1 3.5 4 1 4.5 Complete the function table with points chosen for “x” Plot the points Connect with a line
5
x y -2 -1 -1 -2 1 -1 2 Complete the function table with points chosen for “x” Plot the points Connect with a line This is an absolute value function. It is V-shaped
6
-2 -2 -1 1 2 1 1 2 -2 Complete the function table with points chosen for “x” Plot the points Connect with a line This is a quadratic function because of the x2. Quadratic functions are U-shaped. This one opens downward because the x2 is negative.

A ____________________ graph is a graph that is unbroken.
A ___________________ graph is composed of distinct isolated points. continuous discrete NOTE: All of the graphs in this lesson have been continuous graphs. Determine if the examples below are discrete or continuous graphs. Explain your reasoning. E The number of bagels b remaining in a dozen depends on the number s that have been sold. F The amount of gas g remaining in the tank of a gas grill depends on the amount of time t the grill has been used. This is a discrete graph. Each bagel is sold separately, but you can only by whole bagels. This is a continuous graph. Gas consumption does not have to be in integer units.
