“Putting it all together”
We have talked about the 5 main body systems. Nervous System-structures that control the actions and reactions of the body. Circulatory System-consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. Digestive System-breaks down food that can be used as energy for cells. Respiratory System-system that helps us breathe in and out. Skeletal/Muscular Systems-works together to allow us to do multiple activities.

So…...let’s look at how these systems interact with each other

How the Nervous System interacts with other body systems.
Nervous/Skeletal Bones provide Calcium that is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Skull protects the brain from injury. Vertebrae protect the spinal cord. The brain regulates the position of bones by controlling muscles.

Nervous/Circulatory The brain regulates heart rate and blood pressure. Nervous/Muscular The brain controls movement of the skeletal muscle. The nervous system regulates the speed at which food moves through the digestive tract.

Nervous/Digestive & Excretory The brain controls drinking and feeding behavior. It also controls muscles for eating and elimination. The bladder sends sensory information to the brain. The brain controls urination. Nervous/Respiratory The brain regulates respiratory rate.

How the Circulatory System interacts with other body systems.
Circulatory/Digestive Blood carries broken down nutrients through the blood stream to the body for energy Carries nutrients to cells and waste from cells.

How the Circulatory System interacts with other body systems.
Circulatory/Respiratory Blood carries oxygen from your lungs to your body. The circulatory system also picks up waste products from cells. Ex. When cells use glucose (sugar), they produce carbon dioxide as a waste product. The carbon dioxide passes from the cells into the blood. The circulatory system then carries the carbon dioxide to the lungs, where it is exhaled.

How the Circulatory System interacts with other body systems.
Circulatory/Skeletal Bones have blood vessels and marrow, which produce red blood cells. Red blood cells pick up oxygen and deliver it to the rest of the body. Circulatory/Muscular Smooth muscle helps move materials throughout the body. Found in arteries and veins to control blood flow through the blood vessel.

How the Digestive System interacts with other body systems.
Digestive/Muscular Waves of muscle contractions move food into the stomach. Ex: muscle moves food along the same way you move toothpaste from the bottom of the tube with your thumbs

How the Respiratory System interacts with other body systems.
Respiratory/Muscular Muscles in our body enable us to breath.

Respiratory/Circulatory Alveoli allows for oxygen to move into the blood stream Also receives carbon dioxide to pass back through the lungs and out the body.

Muscular/Circulatory Pumping blood though your body Muscular/Respiratory Enabling you to breathe Muscular/Skeletal Hold you upright Allow you to move.

Connection to Plants Both plants and animals have a circulatory system to transport water, oxygen and nutrients. Plants make their own food for energy; animals eat food for energy Primary energy source is the sun Both use water and oxygen for nutrients Humans have skeletal system for support; plants have a stem and roots for support Both plants and animals digest food, excrete wastes and reproduce
