Tools available under 6 th Framework Programme (I) Networks of Excellence critical mass of research resources and expertise - concentrated in a living network of leading research organisations where information is shared, exchanged and developed new information will result but not primary objective which is the pooling of existing expertise European leadership and world force –joint programme of activities –durable integration of research capacities

Tools available under 6 th Framework Programme (II) Integrated Projects critical mass of activities and resources needed to achieve ambitious clearly defined scientific and technological objectives objective driven research where primary deliverable is new knowledge grouping together of more limited number of research organizations, industry partners, etc to achieve objective

Tools available under 6 th Framework Programme (III) Research for policy support Specific Targeted Projects and Coordination Actions objective driven research where primary deliverable is new knowledge SME specific research 2 specific schemes for SMEs: Co-operative Research ("CRAFT") and Collective Research - large community of SMEs with a capacity to innovate but with inadequate research capabilities

Key deadlines – “call for proposals” First deadline for “call for proposals” – from 1 st December 2003 Remaining deadlines over 2003 - 2004 period Published in official journal of the European Communities Agency will explore possibility of developing role of providing information about Commission “calls for proposals” via its news service functions
