September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Status of OSC and preparations for ADC5 and Physics Challenge 2004 By Bjørn S. Nilsen
2
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Out line Present Near future Future Conclusions
3
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Present Hardware I32 Cluster –256 AMD 1.4-1.533 GHz CPUs 571 SpecInt2K each –Max jobs queued 60 –AliEn limit 40 22840 SpecInt2K I64 Cluster –296 Intel I2 0.9 GHz CPUs 669 SpecInt2K each –Max jobs queued 64 –AliEn limit 40 26760 SpecInt2K Centralized storage –5TByes disk cache –200 TByes of HFN Tertiary tape storage –Given Present limits about 20TBytes in total for ALICE
4
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Present Extras Cluster Ohio processors –Much slower machines but generally more available –AliEn needs to be properly configured Jobs initiated by OSC Data sent back to OSC Many network connections very poor –Local disk storage only
5
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Present Software efforts Jan Labonowski and James Sharpnack Alice Offline web pages Mirrored –http://www.aliceoffline.orghttp://www.aliceoffline.org –Only static pages working Nightly builds, coding conventions checks, code HTML documentation should be added Some pages updated as experience is gained –Reviewing content management packages cvs and cvsWeb subversion Zope Chora SourceSafe
6
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Present Software efforts continue Doug Johnson and Rick Mohr Full AliEn installation at OSC –Fulfill Tier-1 ↔Tier-2 structure –Allow AliEn to be used by OSC based VO’s –Improve local understanding of AliEn –Port AliEn to SUN systems (along with UH) Network Stress Test setup, including bbFTP 3.0 VDT (installed) and EDG (to be installed) installation Systems maintenance and tuning
7
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Network stress test setup Star-tap (OC-3 ?) from Chicago and CERN 622Mbps (DS-3 Port) MREN (OC-12 768Mbps) from Chicago to Columbus (OARnet DS-3 Port) OARnet to OSC 1Gbps OSC to Alice.osc.edu Alice.osc.edu –Alice dedicated front end
8
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Near Future I32 cluster to be replaced –Scheduled November 2003 –512 2.GHz P4 I64 Cluster to be upgraded –Scheduled January 2004 –300 additional 1.4GHz Madisons Mass Storage System to be replaced –Scheduled 1Quarter 2004 –700TByes of spinning disk (potentially IBM Storage Tank)
9
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day SC 2003 November 15 OSC and UH will have booths next to each other –Need to coordinate ALICE displays, presentations and demos –Maximize the impact of ALICE within these two booths OSC wants to help produce ALICE outreach materials to be shown at SC in particular –Collect poster and presentation material and have OSC staff prepare it and produce it for display –Arrange any demos and find and train people to man these demos
10
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Physics Challenge 2 Questions How much, if any, will data arrive from CERN for final processing at OSC? –Network band with likely to be limiting. Will Hits and RecPoints be kept?
11
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Future OSC replaces clusters every ~18 months Past 2004, a doubling every 18 months assumed NSF physics grant to buy Storage 2Q 2007 (matched possibly at 3:1) No subsequent additions have been considered past 2Q 2004 Subsequent grants will need to be considered
12
September 4 2003Alice Offline Week, Reconstruction day Conclusion OSC expects to become a major contributor in the upcoming Physics Challenges and the Network Stress test. OSC hopes to be a supplier of Offline web pages, and not just a simple mirror Software developments are underway.
