Literature Review Key Points
6
Key Point #1... The debate over mandatory school uniforms in the public school system is a topic that is as current today as it was during the 1990s.
7
Key Point # 2... Proponents often claim that uniforms improve many areas in the educational arena while opponents vigorously challenge these claims (Kizis, 2000).
8
Key Point # 3... Opponents often claim potential civil rights violations while school uniform supporters counter that the potential benefits greatly outweigh any loss of freedoms (Kizis, 2000).
9
Key Point # 4... Limited research has indicated positive growth in academic, social, and community circles where a mandated student dress code policy has been adopted for students in a public school system (Million & Magnuson, 1998).
10
Key Point # 5... In the opinion of this researcher, administrators want to control the school climate for learning and discipline, while students desire to control their appearances as an expression of who they are.
11
Key Point # 6... Mauro (1996), noted that student rights and freedom of expression regarding clothing do not interfere with the ordinary process of behavior and learning in schools.
12
Key Point # 7... Elementary school principals are reporting positive effects that school uniforms have on school image in the community, classroom discipline, school spirit, concentration on schoolwork, student safety, and less peer pressure (Million & Magnuson, 1998).
