2  Lawyers advise and represent individuals, businesses, and government agencies on legal issues and disputes.  If you become a criminal attorney you likely will spend a great deal of time preparing for and going to court. If you become a civil attorney, how much time you spend in a courtroom will depend on what kind of law you practice and where you do your work.

3  All lawyers must have a law degree and must also normally pass a state’s written bar examination.

4  $130,880 per year  ž $5,235,200 in a lifetime

5  Employment of lawyers is likely to grow 10 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all jobs.  Competition for jobs should continue to be strong because more students graduate from law school each year than there are jobs available.

6  Arbitrators, Mediators, and Conciliators help decide conflicts outside of the court system by facilitating negotiation and dialogue between disputing parties. You will need a Bachelor’s degree. Pay per year is $61,280.  Judges and Hearing Officers apply the law by control the legal process in courts. They also conduct pretrial hearings, resolve administrative disputes, facilitate negotiations between opposing parties, and issue legal decisions. Will need a Doctoral or professional degree. Pay per year is $102,980.

7  Paralegals and Legal Assistants do a variety of tasks to support lawyers, including maintaining and organizing files, conducting legal research, and drafting documents. You will need a Associate’s degree. The year pay is $46,990.  Postsecondary Teachers instruct students in a wide variety of academic and vocational subjects beyond the high school level. They also conduct research and publish scholarly papers and books. Pay is $68,970.
