Naming Compounds With Transition Metals

Naming Transition Metals The Stock System Transition Metals have variable oxidation numbers so we have to tell what charge the ion has in our compound #1 – Name the metal. #2 – Add a roman numeral telling the charge on the metal in parentheses. #3 – Name the negative ion as before.

Roman Numerals 1I 2II 3III 4IV 5V 6VI 7VII 8VIII 9IX 10X

Examples: CrO Since we know that O is a - 2 charge, Cr must be a +2 to balance it out. Chromium (II) oxide FeCl 3 Since we know that Cl is a - 1 charge, Fe must be a +3 to balance it out. Iron (III) chloride

Writing Formulas with Transition Metals Because transition metals are variable the charge of the metal is represented with a roman numeral. Copper (I) has a charge of +1 Copper (II) has a charge of +2

Examples Copper (I) and chlorine CuCl +1 CuCl Copper (II) and chlorine CuCl 2 Nickel (III) perchlorate Ni(ClO 4 ) 3

Group I and II metals (Main group) and Al do not use the stock system.
