John Harauz Standards Activities Board IEEE Computer Society June 2005 SAB Marketing Initiatives Long Beach Meeting June 2005

Topics for Discussion l SA Fees Structure l Standards Fees/Copyright l SAB Website l CS Standards Conference l Digital Library l Standards Related Products l Standards Related Promotions

SA Fees Structure l Work with IEEE-SA to: l set up alternate fee structure to replace fees for standards l bury fees for SA individual membership to eliminate SA individual fees as a roadblock. l We need to draft a recommendation in support of this. l Investigate new types of memberships – specifically in support of other volunteer or non-profit organizations.

Standards Fees/Copyright l Make standards downloadable if used for non-commercial uses. l Offer a subset of core standards to colleges, universities, and technical schools at no, or significantly reduced, cost (liaise with EAB). l Make portions of standards copyright free (Robby Robson). l Investigate alternative licensing (Robby Robson).

SAB Website l Develop a Comprehensive website. l Dave Schultz and Claire Lohr working a PIF for website redesign to include portal type capabilities. l Each SAB sponsor maintain consistent websites with similar look, feel. l Ensure SA website points at SAB website and vice versa and have consistent information. l Work with SA to ensure clear linkage with ANSII on US tags pertinent to SAB. l ANSII website description with respect to IEEE SA could be updated.

CS Standards Conference l Organize a CS Standards Conference jointly with CS TAB and IEEE SA. l Propose to hold in Washington DC near federal organizations. l IEEE CS/US standards strategy would be a timely theme as all major standards organizations are retooling their strategy. l Conduct a comprehensive user survey (base on experience with ISESS’99). l Have a mix of invited speakers, round tables, panels, invited papers and workshops. l A smaller scale conference/symposium could be moved globally i.e., Europe, Japan, Australia/Malaysia and back to US annually or biannually depending on practicality and interest.

Digital Library l Need to improve integration between CS Digital library and IEEE digital library. l Papers related to CS standards are available at IEEE level but not at CS level. l When doing Google searches two sets of passwords are necessary to access papers, including two separate fees. l In the immediate term, work to setup a membership structure to access both the IEEE digital library and the CS digital library. l In the longer term investigate feasibility of merging with CACM digital library.

Standards Related Products l Continue current direction of developing standards-related books. l Develop CDs with Table of Contents for document deliverables and real examples. l Develop documents with interpretation guidance on standards compliance and implementation and make available on website. l Develop metrics for Standards to show ROI.

Standards Related Products (cont’d) l Package standards better: l S2ESC is example l complete Standards packages by product and sector. l Develop and promote standards related services: l e.g. assessments, interpretation advice l set up a designated consultant list. l Develop new standards products: l technical standards (as in ISO) l working group notes l meta-standards for uninitiated users in different sectors to reduce complexity.

Standards Related Promotions l Offer standards and related products at a discount midway through the year. l Offer free giveaways and bonuses like books with standards collections. l Offer standards and related items for discounted sale at conferences.

Volunteers Needed l SA Fees Structure – Draft proposal l Standards Fees/Copyright (working) l SAB Website (working) l CS Standards Conference – Draft proposal l Digital Library – (working) l Standards Related Products – Draft proposal l Standards Related Promotions – Draft proposal
