WELCOME… PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGISTS

CHECKLIST Fossil skulls Rulers Data tables

SKULL OBSERVATIONS Observe the fossil skulls in front of you Arrange the fossil skulls in order from the most primate-looking to the most human-looking

Skull Observations Click here to go to http://www.becominghuman.org/newshttp://www.becominghuman.org/news When you get to the site: 1. Click on “Launch Documentary” 2. Click on the “Anatomy” tab at the top of the screen 3. Click on “Hominid Profiles” at the bottom of the page 4. Use the hominid profiles to help you match these names with the fossil skulls you arranged Homo erectus Australopithecus afarensis Homo neanderthalensis CroMagnon (not on the website) Chimpanzee (not on the website) Australopithecus africanus Homo sapiens (modern human) Gorilla gorilla (not on the website)

MORE DATA… Now collect some additional data about the skulls Complete the skulls data table and glue it into your journal Answer the following questions What changes occur in the shape of the face as you move from most primate-like to most human-like? What was the most interesting/surprising thing that you learned in this part of the lab?

EVEN MORE DATA… Read pages 109-110 using the Paired Reading Strategy (read, discuss, write) Answer the following: What are the characteristics of early primates? How were they similar to and different from modern humans? Draw a timeline of hominid evolution based on the reading and your data.

THE BIG IDEA… Answer the following: How does your skulls data help us understand evolution?
