1 Lesson 1: Possessives

2 Rule 1: The possessive form of a noun shows that something belongs to it. For example, My Family’s beach house might be gone after the storm.

3 Possessive Rule 2: If the noun is singular, add an ‘s to the end of it to make it possessive. Joseph’s dog.

4 Possessive Rule 3: If the noun has an s, z, or x at the end of it, just add an apostrophe, not an s. Dr. Suess’ books.

5 Possessive **Rule 4: If the noun is plural and the next word is plural and ends in s, add an apostrophe to make it possessive. The students’ lives (Correct) The students’s lives (NOT correct)

6 Possessive Rule 5: If the noun is plural and doesn’t end in s, then add an ‘s to make it possessive. The children’s candy.

7 Possessive These 5 rules will take practice to remember, but basically remember this: If it ends with an s sound, then you use an apostrophe WITHOUT an s to show possession. If the noun doesn’t end with an s sound, then use an ‘s to show possession.
