Landscape Photography

Anticipation Guide 1. If a photo includes a subject, it cannot be considered Landscape photography. Yes or No? Explain.

2. Any photo taken outside is considered landscape photography? Yes or No. Explain.

3. The only way to get a great Landscape photo is by using a wide angle lens? Yes or No. Explain.

Grand Landscape A style of landscape photography that features large and majestic images of the natural world.

Landscape Details & Close-ups Photograph things of nature up close for detail-oriented shots. Things such as streams, trees, rocks, and shrubs.

Abstracted Elements Objects in an image that appear as shapes, forms, values, and textures with no reference to the objects relative size, scale, or origin.

Unity When all parts and objects in your image are related to each other in subject matter, appearance, value, color, texture, size, or shape.

Variety Refers to all the diverse art elements found in a picture, such as light and dark, big and small, and smooth and rough.

Tips on Taking a Landscape Photo 1. THINK DETAILS: Use a higher F- stop (F16 or higher) to use less light in allowing you to use a slower shutter. The more details the better, but be careful not to include so much that you don’t have anything emphasized.

STEADY HAND 2. If you plan to use a slow shutter to add detail and depth of field make sure you use a tripod to avoid “shake” blur. For really slow shutter speeds, use a cable release to prevent movement caused by your hand hitting the shutter.

AIM FOR SOMETHING 3. Landscape photos are the same as other photos. You need a subject to make it interesting. Pointing the camera at a mountain and hitting the shutter isn’t going to always result in an amazing photograph. Think of a “story” for each photograph and try to tell it within the frame.

“Walking…” Kyaw Min Htike

Always Be Ready 4. Nature is constantly changing. You should always have your camera and be ready to capture the few minutes of morning or evening light or the rolling thunder clouds, etc.

Be Patient 5. The beautiful moments in time captured by landscape photographers will probably never happen the same way in quite the same. Be prepared to wait for the perfect shot.
