Isolation Precautions
2
Used to prevent others from becoming infected Can be emotionally difficult Must wear PPE’s when in the room CDC recommends 3 types of transmission based precautions
3
Transmission ◦ Spread by the air ◦ Pathogen is very light and tiny ◦ Pathogen suspends on dust & moisture in the air ◦ Travels for long distances (& in ventilation sys)
4
PPE’s Required ◦ Gloves ◦ (HEPA) High Efficiency Particulate Air Respirator
5
Requirements 1.Private room 2.Wash hands 3.Wear PPE’s (Glove, Mask) 4.Negative air pressure with high efficient filtration 5.Limit transport (Resident must wear mask) 6.Single use equipment 7.Bag linen 8.Discard infectious trash
6
Transmission ◦ Spread in the air ◦ Spread by droplets in mucus from oral, nasal, & respiratory secretions ◦ Droplets remain within 3 ft. of the resident ◦ Pathogens are too large to be carried in the air currents
7
PPE’s Required ◦ Gloves ◦ Surgical mask (within 3 ft. of resident)
8
Requirements 1.Private room 2.Wash hands 3.Wear PPE’s (Gloves, Mask) 4.Visitors maintain 3 ft. of space with resident 5.Limit transport of resident 6.Single use equipment 7.Bag linen 8.Discard infectious trash
9
Transmission ◦ Spread by direct / indirect contact ◦ Found of the skin, urine, & fecal waste
10
PPE’s Required ◦ Gloves ◦ Gown (with direct contact with the resident)
11
Requirements 1.Private room 2.Wash hands 3.Wear PPE’s (Gloves, Gown) 4.Limit transport of resident 5.Single use equipment 6.Bag linen 7.Discard infectious trash
12
Transmission ◦ Disease of the immune system ◦ Noncontagious
13
PPE’s Required ◦ Gloves ◦ Gown ◦ Mask ◦ Must be sterile
14
Requirements 1.Private room 2.Sterile PPE’s 3.Limit # of visitors 4.Room air filtered 5.Avoid children visiting
