3. The nervous system send messages to and from the brain to the rest of your body. The body has control systems that handle stimuli. The changing conditions inside an organism to keep it alive, even though the environment changes, is called homeostasis. The Central Nervous System (CNS) is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is made up of all the nerves that are not part of the CNS. Ex: cranial nerves, spinal nerves. PNS connects the brain and spinal cord to other body parts.

4. Digestion is the process that breaks down food into small molecules so that they can move into the blood. Two parts to the digestive system: digestive tract and the accessory organs. Digestive tract Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus Accessory organs Tongue, teeth, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

5. Moves materials throughout your body system. Heart has 4 chambers: the right and left atriums and the right and left ventricles. Organs of the Circulatory System Heart, arteries, veins, capillaries and blood

6. The respiratory system is made up of structures and organs that help move oxygen into the body and waste gases out of the body. Organs of the Respiratory System Pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs

7. Rids the body of waste. The Urinary System is part of the Excretory system. The urinary system rids the blood of wastes produced by the cells, it controls the volume of blood by removing excess water that the body cells produce during respiration. Organs of the Excretory System Kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, liver. The respiratory and circulatory systems work to rid the body of waste gases. These systems work together as part of the excretory system.

8. Muscles help make all your movements possible. There are 3 types of muscles: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle. Muscles that you are able to control are called voluntary muscles. Muscles that you are not able to consciously control are called involuntary muscles.

9. Your skin is your body’s largest organ. Skin in made up of three layers of tissue: the epidermis, the dermis and a fatty layer. Skin Functions 1. Protection 2. Sensory response 3. Formation of vitamin D 4. Control body temperature 5. Ridding the body of waste

10. The skeletal system is your body’s framework, it includes 206 bones. The skeletal system has five major functions: 1. The skeleton gives shape and support to your body. 2. Bones protect your internal organs. 3. Major muscles are attached to bones. 4. Blood cells are formed in the center of many bones in the soft tissue called red marrow. 5. Major amounts of calcium and phosphorus compounds are stored in the skeleton for later use.

11. The Endocrine system sends chemical messages to different parts of your body. Endocrine glands produce hormones that control the body in many ways. Endocrine Glands and Organs Pineal gland, pituitary gland, thymus, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries and testes.

12. Reproduction is the process that continues life on Earth. Reproductive systems are different in males and females. Male Reproductive Organs Penis, scrotum, testes Female Reproductive Organs Ovaries, uterus
