What knowledge will my students be learning? –2. What will be done to help my students learn the required knowledge? –3. How will I know if my students have learned the required knowledge? –4. How can the unit be improved? –5. How can the unit be prepared for use by others?

4 Division of Public Schools (PreK -12) Florida Department of Education “Big Ideas” in Mathematics Three per grade level For example, in Grade 2: –BIG IDEA 1 Develop an understanding of base-ten numerations system and place-value concepts. –BIG IDEA 2 Develop quick recall of addition facts and related subtraction facts and fluency with multi-digit addition and subtraction. –BIG IDEA 3 Develop an understanding of linear measurement and facility in measuring lengths.

5 Division of Public Schools (PreK -12) Florida Department of Education “Big Ideas” in Science 18 big ideas that thread throughout the K – 12 plan for science learning: Examples in grade 2: –Earth Structures (Big Idea 6) Humans continue to explore the composition and structure of the surface of Earth. External sources of energy have continuously altered the features of Earth by means of both constructive and destructive forces. All life, including human civilization, is dependent on Earth’s water and natural resources. –Forms of Energy (Big Idea 10) A. energy is involved in all physical processes and is a unifying concept in many areas of science. B. energy exists in many forms and has the ability to do work or cause a change.

11 Division of Public Schools (PreK -12) Florida Department of Education These standards will: establish and specify core content knowledge and skills that K-12 students are expected to acquire establish specific curricular content include distinct grade level expectations for knowledge and skills by each individual grade level from kindergarten through grade 5. The standards for grades 6 through 12 may be organized by grade clusters of more than one grade level.
