Application problem 1. A guitar has 6 strings. How many strings are there on 6 guitars? Write a multiplication sentence and solve. 1x6= 6 2x6=12 We know that 1 row represents 1 guitar. It has six strings. (1x6) We also know that the other 2 rows have 6 strings as well. (2x6) When we add them together we have 3 rows of 6. (1x6) + (2x6) = 18

Extend your thinking 2. 6 + 12 = 18 ( 1x6) + (2x6) = 3 sixes (1x6) + (2x6) = 6 + _______ 12 goes in the blank *Parentheses show us how numbers are grouped. 1 row of six equals (1x6), 2 rows of 6 equals (2x6) 1 six 2 sixes Does this equation match the problems above? (1+2) x 6 = 18

Explanation 3. I will know that my equations are correct because they will equal the same answer. (1x6) + (2x6) = 18 (1+2) x 6 = 18 3 x 6 = 18 6 + 12 = 18 (1x6) + (2x6) = 6 + 12 = 18
