People prefer their individual definition of marriage rather than following a conventional idea of marriage. The focus has shifted to “ LOVE “. They want to marry who they love irrespective of what society thinks. The rituals in modern marriages have also changed. Some may follow the traditional ways and some may make up their own.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Modern Marriage Types of Marriages seen today Traditional Marriage : Generally, a couple comprising of a man and woman is considered traditional. They can get married through various means such as -- A wedding by law -- Or by their religious beliefs eg. Church weddings.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Modern Marriage Same Sex Marriage It refers to partners of the same gender getting married. It is not legalized everywhere yet, but there is a growing awareness about the issue. People have begun accepting it more willingly in today’s world.

Here, both the partners chose to sign a contract on the term and length of their marriage. When the contract expires, the couple can either renew it or terminate it according to the agreed upon terms. This type of marriage is still gaining popularity..

This is particularly more common in today’s time, where the age gap is too big. People have started perceiving age as “ just a number “ and prefer older or younger spouses. Eg. George Clooney (actor) is married to Amal Alamuddin.(lawyer) who is 35 while he is 53. Age gap : 18 years.

It allows extramarital affairs for both the spouses and both of them have the option of maintaining outside relationships beyond the marriage terms. It can be one sided as well. Swinging is one kind of open marriage.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Modern Marriage POLYGYNY POLYANDRY Polygyny is a very popular kind of marriage in which a man has more than one wife and there are certain biological, economic and sociological reasons behind the acceptance of this kind of marriage practice. Widely practiced by the Muslims of the Middle East It is the vice versa of polygyny, where a woman has more than one husband. It is less common and seen mostly in places where women outnumber men in population.

Also it is socially accepted due to various reasons. Such as : -- The romantic quotient --Mentioned in the Bible under the term “marriage in heaven”
