3  1912 -Montessori Schools  1916 - The American Federation of Teachers  1916 - John Dewey's “Democracy and Education”.  1917 - The Smith-Hughes Act passes. This act funded vocational schools

4  1919 - The Progressive Education Association  1919 – States must provide public transportation for school students  1920 -Urban Population Grows forcing more students in schools in the city

5  1922 -Pope Pius XI condemns co-education  1922 - The International Council for Exceptional Children  1925 - Tennessee vs. John Scopes. Results made it illegal to teach evolution in schools  1926 - The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) 1929 - Jean Piaget's The Child's Conception of the World

6  1932 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected president and begins bold efforts to initiate his New Deal  1935 –WPA is passed thus creating more schools  1939 – Student transportation established. The school bus is made yellow

7  1944 -GI Bill of Rights  1950 -Brown v. Board: landmark court case  1946 - In the landmark court case of Mendez vs. Westminster and the California Board of Education: Prohibited segregation of Mexican- American Students

8  1953 - B.F. Skinner's “Science and Human Behavior”  1957 –Little Rock High School integration project  1960 -Ruby Bridges is the first African American student to enter a school in New Orleans. She is by herself when all the Caucasian students are pulled out by parents.

9  1962 - In the case of Engel v. Vitale: Cannot have an official school prayer to be recited at the beginning of each school day.  1963 - President John F. Kennedy assassinated. Schools are closed.  1964, the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities,  1964 - The Civil Rights Act  1965 -State Desegregation Plan

10  1965 - The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)  1965 - The Higher Education Act  1965 - Project Head Start  1966 - Jerome Bruner's Toward a Theory of Instruction  1968 - The Bilingual Education Act  1969 -Sesame Street: An educational children’s learning show. Still being broadcast today.

11  1969 - Herbert R. Kohl's book, The Open Classroom: This encouraged schools to teach without walls in one large room  1970 - In his controversial book, Deschooling Society, Ivan Illich argues against typical public schools  1970 - Jean Piaget's book, The Science of Education

12  1974 -Forced Bussing  1979 –America exceeds 150 billion on educational funding  1972 - The Indian Education Act becomes law: Must meet the needs of American Indians and Alaskan Natives students in schools  1972 - Title IX of the Education Amendments becomes a law. Schools cannot discriminate due to gender.

13  1973 - The Rehabilitation Act becomes law. Students with help problems are eligible for a 504 plan.  1975 - The Education of All Handicapped Children Act (PL 94- 142).

14  1981 - John Holt's book, Teach Your Own: A Hopeful Path for Education,  1982 - Madeline C. Hunter's book, Mastery Teaching  1990 - Public Law 101-476, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for special education students.  1990 - Teach for America: Helps rural areas and under developing counties.

15  1992 -Education Reform  1991 – First charter school approved  1993 - Jacqueline and Martin Brooks' In Search of Understanding: The Case for Constructivist Classrooms: Lead to standards based classroom for many states.  2001 - No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB): Still a controversial issue today

16  One can see that America went through numerous changes as time progressed. Many educational philosophers made their mark on society, and their practices are still in use today. Education was impacted by society as well. As technology advanced so did education. Thoughts and practices changed education as well.
