This lecture will use the life of Tisquantum to: Examine the first contact between the English and Wampanoag in North America Examine some of the reasons Europeans came to North America Look at the impact that this interaction had upon the indigenous people of North America

The Characters Tisquantum –Pautuxet –Kidnapped as a teenager and taken to Europe Massassoit –Political leader of Wampanoag Alliance Samoset –Leader of a group who was part of the Wampanoag Alliance (from current day Maine) –Spoke some English The “Pilgrims” –English religious separatists

Some questions… Why would Massasoit agree to help the English? Why would the English come to North America? Why was it easy for the English to conquer a large native population?

People of the Dawnland Wampanoag People Population of about 100,000 (before any British contact - late 1500’s) Spoke a version of Algonquin called Massachussett Farmed corn Fish - salmon, shad, sturgeon, alewive (herring like) High standard of living
