1 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 9 November 13 th, 2015 Science Next Week Science Weekly Review 11/9 The students read the historical information on the first floatation device. They found the main idea, three important words that were in the main idea, three important details from the reading and wrote a summary of the passage. 11/10 The students learned about the parameters and materials for the creation of their life jacket. 11/12 The students will began to work on the creation of their life jacket. They found the density of the toy soldier with and without the floatation device. They also created a graph. 11/13 The students completed the life jackets and tested them. 11/16 Students will revisit their Life Jacket data and will write down any of the modifications they would make to it. 11/17 Students will read Science in a Bathtub. They will answer the Focus Question: How can science be used to solve a mystery? 11/18 Students will revisit the orange experiment and write what they think about it now. 11/19 Students will write claims and evidence based upon the Big Question: How can an understanding of density help to design a life jacket? 11/20 Review of the unit. Captain Ward in a life jacket. After School Detention What leads to an after school detention? 1. Missing an assignment 3 or more times in 1 week. 2. If it’s a short week… Missing an assignment 2 or more times in that week. * This means it could be in any of the 4 subject areas not just one specifically. Example: Missing a Math assignment on Monday, missing an ELA assignment on Wednesday, & missing another Math assignment on Thursday.

2 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review This week students extend their previous understanding of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. They construct division stories and solve word problems involving division of fractions (6.NS.1). Through the context of word problems, students understand and use partitive division of fractions to determine how much is in each group. They explore real-life situations that require them to ask, “How much is one share?” and “What part of the unit is that share?” Students use measurement to determine quotients of fractions. They are presented conceptual problems where they determine that the quotient represents how many of the divisor is in the dividend. For example, students understand that 6 cm/2 cm derives a quotient of 3 because 2 cm divides into 6 centimeters three times. They apply this method to quotients of fractions, understanding 6/7 divided by 2/7 = 6 sevenths/2 sevenths = 3 because, again, two-sevenths divides into six-sevenths three times. Volume 4 Issue 9 November 13 th, 2015 Take A Peek At Next Weeks Math!  Monday 11.16 Lesson 7: The Relationship Between Visual Fraction Models & Equations  Tuesday 11.17 Lesson 8: Dividing Fractions & Mixed Numbers  Wednesday 11.18 Lesson 9: Sums & Differences of Decimals  Thursday 11.19 Lesson 10: The Distributive Property & the Products of Decimals  Friday 11.20 Lesson 11: Fraction Multiplication & the Products of Decimals. ELA with Mr. Knowles *All students are required to read at least three AR books every marking period. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The three AR books and quizzes are due on November 18, 2015. This past week students read chapter 12 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. For each chapter students had to identify and journal the main idea, unfamiliar vocabulary words, blog responses on Edmodo.com, and collaborate effectively with peers. Students also reviewed the Writing Process and the 6+1 Writing Traits using the structure of Team Mapping in preparation for their test on Monday, November 16. ELA Next Week On Monday 11/16, students will have a test on the Writing Process and 6+1 Writing Traits. We’ll also continue Module #1, Unit 1. Students will connect different stages of The Hero’s Journey to the events from chapters 12-14. You can find Module #1 here: https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6- english-language-arts https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6- english-language-arts Social Studies Next Week Next week students will move forward to taking an in-depth look at the Israelites, Phoenicians, and Lydians between 2,000B.C. and 500 B.C. Monotheism, the creation of a phonetic alphabet and coined money will bring a change to the Fertile Crescent and how this change caused major changes in the world.. Social Studies With Ms. Hall This Week This week students explored Mesopotamia, the Fertile Crescent, which is modern day Iraq. They traced the Tigris and Euphrates rivers which ran through Mesopotamia back from the Persian Gulf to their origins in the mountains. They discovered that civilization didn’t occur over night but rather took 5,000 years to complete the first five steps which were; domestication of crops and animals, building permanent houses, developing technology, making intellectual achievements such as the creating the calendar and the first writing system, and finally creating laws and rules.
