Reported speech Nepřímá řeč
3
Direct vs indirect speech 1/ Direct speech are direct words that somebody uttered: Ex: “I can’t go there,” said Angela. 2/ Reported speech happens when we paraphrase what the other person said: Ex: Angela said that she couldn’t go there.
4
Usage In reported speech we have a main clause and a dependent clause The main clause is usually in the past: He said (that) he did not want to see her again. When we tell people what someone has said in the past we must change the tense of the dependent sentence: Ex: “I want to buy a new car.” He said he wanted to buy a new car.
5
The tense changes Present simplePast simple I want to go to the cinema. She said she wanted to go to the cinema. Present continuousPast continuous He is waiting for you. He said he was waiting for you. Present perfectPast perfect I have done my homework. She said she had done her homework.
6
Present perfect continuous Past perfect continuous I haven't been listening to them. He said he had not been listening to them. Past simplePast perfect I went there. She said she had gone there. Past perfectNO CHANGE We had seen it twice. They said they had seen it twice.
7
Future WILLWOULD I will not help her. She said she would not help her. Be going towas/were going to I am going to study the whole weekend. He said he was going to study the whole weekend.
8
Practice: report the sentences 1/ My parents are very well. 2/ I have given up my job. 3/ I want to go away for the holiday. 4/ I am feeling ill. 5/ Let’s have fish and chips for lunch. 6/ I have never seen such a beautiful view! 7/ This is a friend of mine. 8/ She has a very good job.
9
But! When we are reporting something that was said in the past but is still true, it is not obligatory to change the tense The choice is up to the speaker. Ex: "The bus doesn't stop here anymore." 1/ He said the train doesn't stop here anymore. 2/ He said the train didn't stop here anymore.

Reported questions Direct questionIndirect question 1. "Do you want something to drink?" He asked me if I wanted something to drink. 2. "Where do you come from?" He asked her where she came from.

Susan said that you were looking for a job. B, we have to introduce TO: Ex. He said to me that you were leaving soon.
