Counterargument and Rebuttal What are these???
2
Here’s an example Your CLAIM: My parents should buy me a new car.
3
YOUR ARGUMENT : My parents should buy me a new car because I have demonstrated that I am a safe driver.
4
You stated your claim and your argument. In the COUNTERARGUMENT, your parents tell you WHY your argument doesn’t work – maybe by pointing out the “flaws” in your argument. Then, in the REBUTTAL, you explain or point out the “flaws” of your parent’s counterargument.
5
Parent’s Counterargument: I’m afraid a new car will encourage you to drive too fast. Your Rebuttal: I’ve never had a ticket, so that demonstrates that I am a safe driver. Examples
6
Parent’s Counterargument: You don’t have enough experience as a driver to demonstrate that you will drive safely. Your Rebuttal: I got an A in my driver’s education class; this demonstrates that I have the knowledge necessary to show that I am a safe driver.
7
Parent’s Counterargument: Other teens use their cell phones when they drive; we worry that you will too. Your Rebuttal: Let’s examine my cell phone bill; by comparing the times I drive back and forth to school to my actual phone usage, it becomes obvious that I have never used my cell phone during those times.

What would you ask your parents for? State your claim. Now, draw cartoons to that represent three (3) arguments to persuade your parents to agree with your claim. Use color & details, but few words. Cartooning
