Next Science Test: “Earth’s Weather” Unit Test Monday, October 12 Study guide is also posted online

3 Homework: Science Read “Coriolis Effect” reading on the wiki
Complete homework questions for tomorrow

4 Most Missed Question: Review of the Day
“Wind is air that moves from one place to another parallel to the ground. What causes this air to move?”

5 How Does Thermal Move in the Atmosphere?
This is when energy moves outwards in a wave (or ray) from a source RADIATION This is when energy moves through direct contact (touch) between objects or substances CONDUCTION This is when thermal energy (heat) moves because of the circulation (movement) of a fluid away from areas of pressure CONVECTION

6 Layers of the Atmosphere Review:
Altitude Distance above sea level In what layer of the atmosphere is the Ozone Layer located? As altitude increases, the density of air __________.

7 Weather: Key Vocabulary
Air that moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure because of the uneven heating of Earth’s surface WIND This is a measurement of the average amount of thermal energy (how fast the particles are moving) in a substance. It is an important component of weather TEMPERATURE

8 Weather: Key Vocabulary
This is the short-term, day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere in a particular area. WEATHER Major Components that make-up the weather: TEMPERATURE WIND PRECIPITATION AIR PRESSURE HUMIDITY

9 Types of Radiation Review:
Infrared Radiation could also be described as what? Heat in the form of radiation Does infrared radiation have MORE or LESS energy than visible light? Less energy than visible light Does ultraviolet radiation have MORE or LESS energy than visible light? More energy than visible light Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation can do what to a human being? It can cause skin cancer because it damages cells

10 Weather: Key Vocabulary
Two of the systems used to measure temperature: FAHRENHEIT— A temperature scale on which the freezing point of water is 32 degrees and the boiling point of water is 212 degrees CELCIUS– A temperature scale on which the freezing point of water is 0 degrees and the boiling point of water is 100 degrees

11 Ozone Layer Review: What does the ozone layer do?
It shields the Earth from harmful radiation. What type of radiation is blocked by the ozone layer? Ultraviolet radiation

12 Greenhouse Effect Review:
What do greenhouse gases do? Absorb and trap infrared radiation What are some examples of greenhouse gases? Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane What would happen to earth if there was NO GREENHOUSE EFFECT in the atmosphere? Earth would be too cold to support life

13 Air Pressure: Vocabulary
This is the total force or weight of all of the air pushing on a given area; the lower the altitude, the higher this is. AIR PRESSURE This is a device for measuring air pressure. BAROMETER

14 Key Atmosphere Concepts that you MUST know!
As the temperature of air heats up, the air __________ (in other words, it becomes ______ dense) As the temperature of air cools down, the air __________ (in other words, it becomes _______ dense) As Air Density Increases, Air pressure also _________________ As Air pressure Decreases, air density also _________________

15 Key Atmosphere Concepts that you MUST know!
Fluids (such as air) move from areas of ________ pressure to areas of ________ pressure Air pressure is different in different places on Earth because… Because air pressure is different in different places on Earth, air is constantly moving from one place to another, from areas of _______ pressure to areas of _______ pressure within the atmosphere Air moving from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure parallel to Earth’s surface is called _____.

16 What are Global Wind Belts?
Today’s Topic: What are Global Wind Belts?

17 Your Task: 25 minutes Each of you has received a world map to use for this assignment Open to pages A50-A51 in the yellow textbook You will need FIVE different colors to draw on your map On your map, you will need to draw in all of the following, each in a different color In ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, write “DOLDRUMS” all across the latitude that the doldrums are found at In ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, write “HORSE LATITUDES” all across the latitude that the horse latitudes are found at Draw arrows showing the direction of the trade winds all across the latitude that the trade winds are found at Draw arrows showing the direction of the easterlies all across the latitude that the easterlies are found at Draw arrows showing the direction of the westerlies all across the latitude that the westerlies are found at Create a key identifying the colored arrows with what they represent: trade winds, easterlies, westerlies

19 Global Wind Belts: Vocabulary
These are areas of wind on Earth's surface that blow in a constant and predictable manner; these winds blow in a constant direction Global Wind Belts These are regions of Earth’s surface that constantly and consistently have calm weather with practically no wind. Calm Regions

20 Global Wind Belts: Vocabulary
This is an area of low pressure near the equator with very little wind. Doldrums This is an area of high pressure at around 30 degrees North and South latitude. It has very little wind. Horse Latitudes

21 Global Wind Belts: Vocabulary
These are winds found in the tropics of both hemispheres that were historically used for trade in the days of sailing ships. They blow eastward, curving toward the equator. Trade Winds These are wind belts that blow from east to west, from the poles. Easterlies These are wind belts that blow from the west towards the east; from the Horse latitudes toward the Poles. Westerlies

22 Global Wind Belts: Vocabulary
This is a global wind belt that flow along the border of the troposphere and the stratosphere. It blows from East to West. Jet planes will often fly within this wind belt when traveling westward because it helps them to reduce the travel time. Jet Stream

23 Exit Ticket: Access the “Exit Tickets” page of DeBolt’s wiki
