What are Physical Properties? A physical property is a physical characteristic used to describe matter. Examples: State: solid, liquid, gas Texture: hard, soft, stretchy… Shape: round, square, rectangular… Color: Red, blue, clear, black….

Physical Properties can also be measured: Mass – the amount of matter in an object Weight – a measure of the pull of gravity on an object Volume – the amount of space something takes up Density – the amount of matter that occupies a particular space (how compact something is)

What are chemical properties? A chemical property is a characteristic that describes what the substance is made of, or its ability to react or change Examples: Ice is made up of H 2 0 A beaker is made of glass A nail is made of iron and it is magnetic Combustibility: A wick is made of a flammable thread Vinegar reacts with baking soda and makes carbon dioxide bubbles
