Chemistry Mrs. Algier Do Now: List any hazards associated with the Bubbles lab. Identify safeguards that can be put in place to prevent any safety incidents.
2
YWBAT Safely complete your first lab. Distinguish between a substance and a mixture. Differentiate between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures Explain how mixtures can be separated

Lab Pair / Trio 3 - plastic cups – Label 1 - Spoon (use for soap) 2 - Straws per group 1 - 200 mL beaker (use for water) ~1/2 tsp. Salt – put in small cup – label ~1/2 tsp. Sugar – put in small cup - label

Matter Classification Matter Mixture Substance
6
Mixtures Mixture – a physical blend of two or more components Examples – Salad – Chocolate chip cookie – Coffee with milk and sugar – Gasoline – Air
7
Matter Classification Matter Mixture Substance Heterogeneous Homogeneous
8
Heterogeneous Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixture – a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout. Examples – Salad – Chocolate chip cookie – Chicken noodle soup
9
Homogeneous Mixtures Homogeneous Mixture – a mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout. Another name for a homogeneous mixture is a solution. Examples – Vinegar – Air
10
Phase Phase– any part of a sample with uniform composition and properties. Homogeneous Mixtures – 1 phase Heterogeneous Mixtures – 2 or more phases
11
Separating Mixtures Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures Methods – Filtration – separates a solid from a liquid – Distillation – separates liquids based on boiling pt. – Magnetism
12
Filtration Filtration – the process that separates a solid from a liquid in a heterogeneous mixture – Filter paper is placed in a funnel. – The mixture is poured into the funnel. – Solid particles that cannot pass through the filter remain in the funnel. – The rest of the particles pass through.
13
Distillation Distillation – process which separates mixtures of liquids with different boiling points
