1
Today’s Objective We will be able to calculate the distance and displacement of an object by constructing a diagram
2
Video What is the difference between distance and displacement?
3
Motion Motion is the change in position of an object over a period of time.
4
Starting Point A STARTING POINT is the point from which you can measure the change in an objects position Reference Point
5
Distance Distance is how far an object moves along the entire path. Distance = 4 meters 3 meters Total distance traveled = 7 meters
6
Displacement Displacement = 5 meters southeast Distance = 4 meters Distance = 3 meters Reference Point Displacement is the overall change in position from the reference point– this is a straight line & always has a direction and a distance
7
Distance or displacement???
11
GP #1 Kacy runs around the 400 meter track exactly 3 times. What is her distance traveled? What is her displacement?
12
Guided Practice #2 James spins around in the same place 5 times, and then walks 3 feet north before falling down. What is his distance traveled and displacement?
13
Guided Practice #3 You drive three kilometers to the East and two kilometers to the west. What is your distance and displacement?
14
I throw a ball 3 meters into the air and catch it from the same position that I threw it from. What is the distance traveled by the ball? What is the displacement? Guided Practice #4
15
Guided Practice #5 Jermaine walks 2 miles south, 3 miles east, and 2 miles north. What is his distance traveled and displacement?
16
Extension Work at HALF-LEVEL voices Raise your hand if you have a question!
18
Exit Ticket 1- draw 2- find distance 3- find displacement 1)Complete the exit ticket independently
