The Chinese Communist Revolution Who: Mao Zedong When: 1949 Where: The capital, Beijing, thus all of China Why: Communism offered opportunities for the peasants How: Mao came out of the north where Chiang Kai Shek had chased him on the Long March and took over the capital. What: China became the 2 nd Communist country in the world in 1949. Everything came under government control. It becomes the People’s Republic of China. Chaing Kai Shek fleed to Taiwan and the U.S. continued for the next 10 years to fund him in hopes he would return to the mainland and defeat Mao and the Communists.

Mao’s Plan for modernizing China was called : The Great Leap Forward What: A plan to transform China into a self sustaining agricultural utopia When: 1958 Why: Communism was the answer Outcome: Between 18-24 million people died of starvation. This became known as the Great Famine. Reaction: Mao, fearful of his future after millions starved to death, launches a Cultural Revolution to try to ensure he stays in power. He uses the youth of China to promote himself. These kids became known as the Red Guards. They stood on street corners and preached Mao’s Little Red Book to all. They burned all books and materials unrelated to communism.

China’s Cultural Revolution Set into motion by Mao Zedong, its stated goal was to enforce communism in the country. The revolution marked the return of Mao Zedong to a position of power after the failed Great Leap Forward. The movement paralyzed China politically and significantly affected the country economically and socially.
