Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Agenda Indiana’s NHD – Current Data Contents and Status Mike Martin, IN Department of Natural Resources IGIC Waters Workgroup

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships The Waters Framework Data Plan Establishes the National Hydrography Dataset for Indiana as the IndianaMap framework data for surface water Sets a strategy to correct errors and improve the NHD to Local Resolution Identifies the State GIO as steward of the Dataset Identifies a Data Maintenance Workflow The Waters Framework Data Plan Highlights

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Existing National Hydrography Dataset Feature-based database of nation’s surface water drainage system, part of the National Map Network of streams, rivers, and other flowlines; lakes, ponds, and other waterbodies Other lines, areas, and points Suitable for modeling water flow Suitable for addressing local features and events to water features Maintained at the state level and fed into national geodatabase National Hydrography Dataset

Existing National Hydrography Dataset Existing condition of the NHD for Indiana “High-resolution” NHD Features in current NHD based upon 20+ year-old paper1:24,000 (1” = 2,000’) USGS Topographic Quad Maps Inconsistencies from quad to quad Most users require data at better scale Features have changed since maps were created Problems with missing or incorrect names

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Stewardship of Indiana’s NHD Download entire sub-basin (8-digit HUC) from USGS website Edit, using NHD GeoEdit tools Submit to USGS Review by USGS USGS loads into national database Users need to re-download subbasin *Any names must be in GNIS names Current Stewardship Workflow, owned by GIO

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Improving Indiana’s NHD Corrects the existence and the locations of physical features Data would be at scale of 1:2,400 or 1:1,200 and aligned to 2005 IndianaMap Orthophotography Inconsistencies between quads will be removed Naming of features will be improved Network connectivity and flow direction will be improved Statewide water flow model of 2005 water features, ensuring connectivity and modeling across community boundaries Statewide stream addressing system with linear referencing Benefits of NHD Upgrade to Local Resolution

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Improving Indiana’s NHD Existing High-Res NHD in RED Improved NHD using 2005 DOQQ in BLUE Improving the NHD will result in additional features added.

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Improving Indiana’s NHD Improving the NHD will result in alignment to 2005 IndianaMap Orthophotography Existing High Res NHD in RED Improved NHD YELLOW

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Improving Indiana’s NHD 1.Correct GNIS name errors in High-Resoultion NHD  features missing names, incorrect names assigned to features, names missing from GNIS  workgroup members, IGIC intern  21 subbasins complete  goal to finish in 2011 ……………………………more from Lacey coming up Strategy to Correct Errors and improve the NHD to local resolution

Coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, and building partnerships Improving Indiana’s NHD 1.Correct GNIS name errors in High-Resolution NHD 2.Create local resolution NHD  Create features from 2005 IndianaMap Orthophotography and appropriate local vector data  Add correct attribute information for each feature, using existing NHD and other sources.  Create water flow direction and connectivity  AECOM/Pinnacle/Cripe Strategy to Correct Errors and Upgrade the NHD
