The Puritans wanted to escape religious persecution in England What was happening in England? As soon as they got to the colonies set up their own religious persecution! There was NO religious freedom in the Puritan colonies You were only allowed to be a Puritan! The Congregational Church grows out of this All other New England colonies start to follow this idea (except Rhode Island)

Anyone who didn’t follow the Puritan and John Winthrop’s rules were called Nonconformists or Dissenters Severely punished! Fined / Whipped / Imprisoned Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for their dissenting beliefs Found the settlements that will become Rhode Island!

From 1685 – 1688, King James II attempted to change the entire society of the colonies James II was Catholic and was trying to replace Protestant institutions with Catholic ones 98.4% of the colonists were Protestant Protestants were afraid of both Catholics and the religious turmoil that they ran from! James II is overthrown and King William III & Queen Mary II take the English throne
