Luke 15:11-32 11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

Everything in the parable is intended to drive a spear into the heart of the religious…the elder brothers… How did they respond?  Luke 7 – religious person & the sexual outcast  Luke 19 – religious crowd & the political outcast  John 3-4 – religious teacher & the social outcast

He is more concerned with helping us think rightly than he is with warming our hearts.

Reality Check…  Do you find yourself being offended by Jesus’ prodigal grace & love?  Do you jump to caution and concern when you hear about him hanging out with sinners in THEIR establishments?  Have you isolated yourself from sinners and non- believing people?  Do you get perpetually frustrated, angry, and repulsed by the sins of those around you?  Are you certain that you have already mastered the Gospel?

19. Reality Check…  Do you feel tired of your self-indulgent lifestyle?  Do you feel ashamed of your past, your present, and the prospect of your future?  Are you turned off by your experience with self- righteous religious people?  Are you longing for truth AND grace?

20. Reality Check…  Do you find yourself more and more deeply aware of your own need for grace?  Do you find yourself increasingly burdened by the lost-ness of others around you?  Do you find yourself increasingly engaged offering truth and grace to those around you?

21. Reality Check…  Do we as a church tend to primarily (or even exclusively) draw moralistic religious people?  Do we rarely offend moralistic religious people? If we answer yes to either or both of those questions, then we probably are not declaring the same message that Jesus did…

22. Classic Interpretation Younger Brother = Sinners/Irreligious Elder Brother = Pharisees/Religious Father = God

23. Additional Layers Jesus is what the elder brother should have been The Father is also a prodigal because he spent extravagantly upon BOTH of his sons Jesus is also the extravagant, prodigal younger brother (though in a different way)

24. Jesus like the younger brother? “I am touching here the mystery that Jesus himself became the prodigal son for our sake. He left the house of his heavenly Father, came to a foreign country, gave away all that he had, and returned through his cross to his Father’s home. All of this he did, not as a rebellious son, but as the obedient son, sent out to bring home all the lost children of God. Jesus, who told the story to those who criticized him for associating with sinners, himself lived the long and painful journey that he describes....
