Before We Get Started... If you’re a parent who believes ADHD or ASD are primarily communication or behavior issues, I’d like to share something with you. As someone who has both I've come to learn that it is more a lack of resourcefulness and resilience skills that address the unique needs of their unique set of strengths and challenges. In my case, I needed to find what helps me solve the problems of my life so I can bounce back more quickly, more often and move forward.

You’re In The Right Place If... You are a Parent of a child with ADHD or ASD You want to be able to enjoy the holidays as a family.

Why Listen To Me: Masters in Social Work I've written 5 books including the #1 Amazon Best Selling "Perfect Moments in Relationships I've been practicing social work for 12 years I travel the world training parents and educators I'm raising three sons with Asperger's and ADHD I have Asperger's, ADHD, Dyslexia and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome I coach parents and educators all over the country I survived stage 3 testicular cancer when I was 18 years old I can remain positive no matter how difficult the situation.

The #1 Way I Help Parents of children with ADHD or ASD I teach simple, concrete strategies you can use immediately. This is especially important if you want your child to become a better problem solver. If you use these strategies exactly the way I explain them to you, you could easily see results in the next few days. But you must be consistent.

What you should expect from this Presentation The best payoff about these strategies is when you see your child realize that s/he has the ability to find pleasure in events where s/he previously only saw pain. You’ll learn the keys to creating a stronger bond and feeling of trust with your child. Most important, you’ll learn strategies for navigating the holidays more successfully.

What We’ll Cover The agreements between you and your child that are the key to successful coping. The one strategy that every holiday plan must have. A simple and effective way for brainstorming all the particulars of any event that you need to be prepared to manage. The source of your child’s anxiety and how to decrease it. We’ll also discuss navigating the ocean of relatives who just don’t get it

Let’s get started...

7 Steps for Holiday Success with ADHD or ASD What every Parent needs to know to successfully navigate the holidays.

Brainstorming The things we take for granted are commonly unexpected by our kids. Remember that the one who makes the promises receives the blame. If you want to significantly decrease the chance of a meltdown then pay close attention.

Brainstorming with the 5W’s & an H Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Questions? Who will be there? How long will we stay? What will we do and when? What can we reasonably expect from them? Who gets it and who doesn’t? What are we going to eat? What am I going to eat?

Things to keep in mind Preventing or reducing anxiety is ideal. Find another way for your child to let you know.

Preparing for the unknown Our kids don’t dislike change, they dislike uncertainty because they lack the resourcefulness and resilience to manage it. This is important for anyone who has to spend extended time with your child, especially when there are multiple transitions expected.

Plan B Things never go wrong in life, they just go different.

Uprooting anxiety The more helpless a child feels the more anxious s/he’ll be. “Everything will be okay honey,” isn’t a strategy. You need a plan that involves the child in how things will unfold. Anxiety is contagious, before you tell your child to calm down make sure you’ve done it first.

Agreements Your child doesn’t trust you because you’re the parent. Parent and relative pay close attention. Children don’t listen to people they don’t like or trust. It is most critical to have that trust in stressful situations. The trust you need can be established in moments.

Managing Family What do you understand about the challenges my child or I have? Is there a way we can work together so that we can both enjoy ourselves? In the event I need to take a time out to manage my anxiety is there a quiet place in your home I could go to have some privacy?

Provide a plan In writing What if someone wants to know where I am? Review the plan right before the event What if... Review with your child as well

What’s the problem? Denial Unteachable Unhappiness C.O.T.U.S. Managing your own disappointment

What’s next? A strategy is only as good as the ability to generalize it. What other situations can you think of where it would be useful to have a plan beforehand? Think about how these strategies can make not only holidays, but field trips and play dates more manageable.

What You’ve Learned Today: Concrete, co-created agreements between you and your child are the key to successful coping and provides a foundation for increased resilience. Things never go wrong in life, they just go different. Make sure a Plan B is a part of every discussion you have about your holiday plans. The 5W's are a simple, effective way for brainstorming all the particulars of any event that you need to be prepared to manage. Anticipation anxiety is rooted in helplessness and uprooted with a plan to contribute to the outcome. These strategies are for daily life.
