How Does Web Browsing Work?

The Process of Using a “Browser” You type the URL of a requested Web page such as www.yahoo.com.www.yahoo.com A message is sent to a Domain Name Server (DNS) which returns the “IP” address (e.g., 68.142.226.34). The browser then communicates directly with that address requesting a response. The requested response comes back in the form of an HTTP page which is displayed by the browser. How Does Web Browsing Work?

What’s in a Web Address? Using a Domain Name For Brandeis University, you enter: www.brandeis.eduwww.brandeis.edu A corresponding Internet IP address is substituted (i.e., 129.64.99.138) by a “Domain Name Server” You could optionally use the IP address to request a page URL (Uniform Resource Locator) Each page within a Web site has its own unique URL The BOLLI Web pages are part of the Brandeis Web site and our “URL” is: www.brandeis.edu/bolli/memberswww.brandeis.edu/bolli/members Format Rules Cannot contain: spaces or special characters except “-”, “_” “/” and “.” Must contain a minimum of three parts separated by a period “.” Last part must be one of following: com, edu, gov, mil, net, us, ca, il, fr, de, ru, etc. Web Address Samples (http:// prefix is optional and implicit) www.heier.us Finance.yahoo.com www.irs.gov www.knesset.gov.il

Go to Google (www.google.com)www.google.com Obtain the following information: Dates of Louis D. Brandeis’ birth & death His wife’s maiden name The date he was appointed to the Supreme Court and by whom What does the “D.” stand for? The name of his first law firm Locate a photo of Brandeis dressed in his Supreme Court robe. Bonus #1: What was the composition of the Supreme Court when Brandeis appointed? Bonus #2: What was the “Brandeis Brief”

Exercise: Download & Install Google Toolbar

Go to Google home page. Using Google, locate the page to download the Google “toolbar”. Install the Google toolbar on your computer.

Open Internet Explorer. Go to Google home page. Select “Tools”, “Internet Options” from the Browser menu. Select “Use Current”. Click “OK”. Go to another Web page and test the home page button

What’s in an Email Address? A specific rigid format is required. “user-name”@“domain-name” “User-name” is typically your email login name. “Domain-name” is frequently defined by your ISP. Format rules Cannot contain: spaces or special characters except “-”, “_” and “.” Must contain the “@” sign Address samples lheier@rcn.com l.heier.1@alumni.nyu.edu len@heier.us lenheier@yahoo.com leonard_heier@abc.com (note: contains underscore character between the first and last names) leonard_heier@abc.com
