ATHENS & PHILOSOPHY The city where philosophy became itself. It nurtured: Anaxagoras (500-428) Aristotle (383-323) Socrates (479-399) Diogenes the Cynic (412-323) Plato (427-343) Zeno the Stoic (334-262) Aristippus the Cyrenaic (435-365) Epicurus (341-270) The Birth of Greek Philosophy Aristophanes and Greek Comedy CAMS 499: The playwright parodied intellectual culture, new thinkers, political decision-making, democratic foibles, and his comrades in tragedy and philosophy. How does this public literature give Athenians, and us, an education in critical awareness? PHL 499: What were the nature- philosophers (phusikoi) aiming to learn, how did they differ from the Hellenic sages (sophoi), what happened when everyone moved to Athens, and did ethical thought really start with Socrates?
